The primary target is the GLP-1 receptor, a class B G protein-coupled receptor expressed on pancreatic beta cells, in the gut, and in several brain regions. Receptor activation raises intracellular cyclic AMP, which potentiates glucose-dependent insulin secretion and lowers glucagon release when blood glucose is elevated. Signalling in the hypothalamus and brainstem is associated with reduced appetite and slower gastric emptying. Because the insulinotropic effect depends on prevailing glucose levels, the hypoglycaemic risk of the peptide alone is described as low in most study settings. The relative contribution of peripheral and central actions remains an active research question.
Large randomised trials in adults with type 2 diabetes and in adults with obesity have reported reductions in body weight and improvements in several cardiovascular risk markers. One outcome trial found a lower incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events in participants with diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea and vomiting are the most frequently reported adverse events and often diminish over time. Changes in lean body mass during weight loss are an area of ongoing investigation. Effects in adolescents and in pregnancy are less well characterised, and current labelling advises against use during pregnancy.
Storage conditions for semaglutide depend heavily on the presentation. Lyophilized research powder is generally kept at two to eight degrees Celsius in a sealed container, protected from light and moisture. Manufacturer labeling for finished injectable products specifies refrigeration before first use, with defined in-use periods at room temperature afterward. The oral tablet form is stored at controlled room temperature and is more tolerant of short excursions. Temperature excursions should be documented rather than inferred.
Peptide degradation follows several routes. Hydrolysis cleaves the backbone at susceptible residues, oxidation targets methionine and tryptophan side chains, and aggregation produces higher-molecular-weight species that are difficult to reverse. Light exposure accelerates oxidation, which is why amber glass or opaque secondary packaging is common. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles promote aggregation and are best avoided. Stability-indicating methods detect these changes before they become visible.

| Molecular class | Acylated GLP-1 receptor agonist | 31-residue synthetic peptide |
| Molecular formula | C187H291N45O59 | established for the free peptide |
| Appearance | White to off-white powder | as supplied before formulation |

| Typical storage | 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, protected from light | powder and solution forms differ in shelf life |
Stability studies examine how temperature, pH, and moisture influence degradation rates over time. In aqueous solution, hydrolysis and deamidation accelerate as pH moves away from mildly acidic conditions. Light exposure and residual metal ions can also trigger oxidation of susceptible residues. Accelerated aging at elevated temperature is used to estimate shelf life, though extrapolation to room temperature carries uncertainty because individual degradation pathways do not always scale predictably.
Lyophilized semaglutide powder is typically held at minus twenty degrees Celsius for long-term storage. At that temperature, solid-state degradation reactions proceed slowly and the peptide remains intact for extended periods. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are best avoided because they promote aggregation and can shift the proportion of monomeric peptide present. Working aliquots are often prepared so that each portion is thawed only once, and desiccant is placed inside the vial to limit moisture uptake.
Clinical studies of semaglutide generally measure glycated hemoglobin, fasting plasma glucose, body weight, and composite cardiovascular endpoints. The SUSTAIN program enrolled adults with type 2 diabetes, while the STEP program focused on obesity without diabetes. Administration follows a stepwise escalation schedule designed to limit gastrointestinal effects during the first weeks. Reported outcomes include mean percentage weight change, the proportion of participants reaching defined weight-loss thresholds, and rates of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Long-term data on durability after treatment stops are still limited and remain a topic of ongoing research.
Semaglutide is a synthetic peptide analog of human glucagon-like peptide-1, developed by Novo Nordisk and first approved in 2017 for type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the incretin mimetic class, a group of agents that reproduce the glucose-dependent actions of endogenous GLP-1. The molecule was engineered to resist degradation by dipeptidyl peptidase-4 and to bind serum albumin, extending its half-life from minutes to roughly one week. Approval for chronic weight management followed in 2021, based on large cardiovascular and obesity outcome trials.
GLP-1 receptors are expressed on pancreatic beta cells, in the gut, and in several brain regions. Receptor activation raises cyclic AMP, enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion, and suppresses glucagon release when blood glucose is high. Effects on gastric emptying and on hypothalamic appetite circuits reduce energy intake. Because insulin release remains glucose-dependent, the risk of hypoglycemia is low when the drug is used alone. The precise contribution of each pathway to body weight change in humans remains an area of active investigation.
Activation of the GLP-1 receptor couples to Gs signalling and raises intracellular cyclic AMP in pancreatic beta cells. The resulting insulin release depends on prevailing glucose concentrations, so the effect is greater when glucose is elevated. Receptor engagement also suppresses glucagon secretion and slows gastric emptying, which flattens post-meal glucose excursions. In the central nervous system, signalling in hypothalamic and brainstem regions is associated with reduced appetite and lower energy intake. Studies continue to examine effects on cardiac, renal and hepatic endpoints; whether those benefits are independent of weight change remains an open question.
Clinical development of this compound followed earlier short-acting GLP-1 analogues that required frequent injection. Once-weekly subcutaneous formulations entered use after 2017, and an oral formulation using a permeation enhancer later became available. The oral version pairs the peptide with sodium N-(8-[2-hydroxybenzoyl] amino) caprylate, a carrier that improves uptake across the gastric epithelium. Interest has expanded from glycaemic control into weight management and metabolic liver disease. Regulatory status and approved indications differ between countries, and the product remains subject to ongoing safety monitoring.
Semaglutide is a synthetic peptide that acts as an agonist at the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor. It is a structural analogue of human GLP-1(7-37), modified to resist enzymatic degradation by dipeptidyl peptidase-4. The peptide backbone contains alpha-aminoisobutyric acid at position 8, a substitution that stabilises the helix and slows cleavage. A fatty diacid side chain attached through a linker at lysine 34 promotes binding to serum albumin, which extends the circulating half-life. These two modifications together allow less frequent administration than native GLP-1 requires.
=== During CCE === During 2010–2017, when CBSE implemented a CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation) for Class X students, only the grades obtained by the student were mentioned in the report card in a 9-point grading scale, which translates as follows:
People known to be highly allergic may carry around epinephrine (adrenaline) in the form of a self-injectable EpiPen for the treatment of an anaphylactic shock. For people who experience severe or life-threatening reactions to insect stings, allergy injections composed of increasing concentrations of naturally occurring venom may provide protection against future insect stings.
=== Flow check === A flow check is a check valve used in hydronic heating and cooling systems to prevent unwanted passive gravity flow. A flow check is a simple flow lifted gravity closed heavy metal stopper designed for low flow resistance, many decades of continuous service, and to self-clean the fine particulates commonly found in hydronic systems from the sealing surfaces. To accomplish self cleaning, the stopper is typically not conical. A circular recess in a weight that fits over a matching narrow ridge at the rim of an orifice is a common design. The application inherently tolerates a modest reverse leakage rate, a perfect seal is not required. A flow check has an operating screw to allow the valve to be held open, the opposite of the control on a stop-check valve, as an aide for filling the system and for purging air from the system.
=== Limitations === The phosphine reagents slowly undergo air oxidation in living systems. Additionally, it is likely that they are metabolized in vitro by cytochrome P450 enzymes. The kinetics of the reactions are slow with second order rate constants around 0.0020 M−1•s−1. Attempts to increase nucleophilic attack rates by adding electron-donating groups to the phosphines improved kinetics, but also increased the rate of air oxidation. The poor kinetics require that high concentrations of the phosphine be used which leads to problems with high background signal in imaging applications. Attempts have been made to combat the problem of high background through the development of a fluorogenic phosphine reagents based on fluorescein and luciferin, but the intrinsic kinetics remain a limitation.
== Vaccination Campaign == On 13 November, the government of Sudan requested help from the International Coordinating Group on Yellow Fever Vaccine Provision (YF-ICG) in starting a mass vaccination campaign. Besides the WHO, the YF-ICG consists of representatives of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) airlifted the first batches of vaccines from Khartoum to Darfur on 18 November. Mass vaccination began on 20 November. Efforts were also undertaken to eliminate mosquitoes. A team from the Naval Medical Research Unit Three (NAMRU-3) and the WHO Collaborating Center was deployed from Cairo to help collect and test samples and train local personnel. The vaccination campaign, from late November 2012 through early January 2013, covered more than 3 million people and halted the outbreak. A new phase of the campaign beginning in January covered more than 2 million more people at risk. One of the difficulties was maintaining a cold chain for vaccine viability while transporting vaccine by donkey into remote areas. A situation report released on 10 January 2013 reported that 171 people had died of the disease as of 9 January 2013. The number of suspected cases since 2 September 2012 was 847. The Minister of Health had announced on 5 January that no additional cases had appeared in the previous 3 weeks.

Brendan Lee (born 9 September 1987) is a former professional Australian rules football player at the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), and most notable for his long career with East Perth in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Originally from East Perth, Lee made his senior WAFL debut in 2007 at age 19. By 2010, he was a regular senior player for the Royals, and he won the club's best and fairest award in 2011. After sixty games for the club and at age 24, he was recruited to the Australian Football League by Essendon with a late selection in the 2012 Rookie Draft (No. 78 overall). He played two senior games for Essendon during 2012, debuting in Round 20 against North Melbourne at Docklands Stadium, and played in the Victorian Football League for Essendon's VFL-affiliate Bendigo during the season. He was delisted at the end of the season, and returned to East Perth, where he won another club best and fairest in 2013 and became club captain. Lee, along with 33 other Essendon players, was found guilty of using a banned performance-enhancing substance, thymosin beta-4, as part of Essendon's sports supplements program during the 2012 season. He and his team-mates were initially found not guilty in March 2015 by the AFL Anti-Doping Tribunal, but a guilty verdict was returned in January 2016 after an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency. He was suspended for two years which, with backdating, ended in November 2016; as a result, he served approximately fourteen months of his suspension and missed the entire 2016 WAFL season.
=== Xylitol === Xylitol, a type of sugar alcohol, was first synthesized from beech wood chips in September 1890 in the form of syrups, but no one reported its crystal forms for 50 years. It has two different crystal morphs. One is a metastable, moisture-absorbing form that melts at 61 °C, and the other is a more stable form that melts at 94 °C. Notably, its metastable morph was prepared before the stable form, conforming to Ostwald's rule. When a sample of xylitol in the metastable form is brought into a lab where the stable form had previously been made, the sample would change into the stable form after a few days in the open air. The structure of only the stable crystal was determined by X-ray diffraction in a 1969 publication. The researchers failed to obtain the metastable form from a solution in alcohol, either at room temperature or near freezing; they invariably grew only the stable form. This seems to be because once the stable form has been made in a lab, its seeds or nuclei can disperse in air, influencing new crystals to grow the same way.
Like many large public universities in the U.S., sports are a major activity on campus, and receive a large operating budget. Arizona's athletic teams are nicknamed the Wildcats, a name derived from a 1914 football game with then California champions Occidental College, where the L.A. Times asserted, "the Arizona men showed the fight of wildcats." The University of Arizona participates in the NCAA's Division I-A in the Big 12 Conference, which it was admitted in 2024.
=== Drug-drug interactions === Lamividine/zidovudine interacts with stavudine and zalcitabine by competing intracellularly for activation and results in inhibiting phosphorylation. There is also a known interaction with nephrotoxic or bone marrow suppressive agents (e.g. doxorubicin) which increases the risk of hematologic toxicity of zidovudine. Monitoring renal function and hematologic tests can be used to assess these potential interactions.

Richmond-Bridgeport MLA Teresa Wat claims Findlay made “unfounded accusations about me, including remarks that called my allegiance to Canada into question,” stating she "cannot continue to sit in a caucus led by someone who has questioned my loyalty without evidence and, when given the opportunity to correct the record, has failed to do so.” Courtenay-Comox MLA Brennan Day issued a statement criticizing Findlay's leadership, writing "I have lost confidence in the judgement, conduct, and ethical standards of her leadership and those she has chosen to surround herself with." Abbotsford South MLA Bruce Banman, the first MLA to cross the floor and join John Rustad as a Conservative, wrote "person after person has informed me they have decided that our new leader is unelectable," instead he is "joining an ever increasing number of MLAs to sit as an independent MLA in the BC Legislature". Banman also wrote he "would encourage my fellow MLAs regardless of political affiliation to join me." Boundary-Similkameen MLA Donegal Wilson cited Findlay's hiring of "Alberta separatist[s]" as the reason for her resignation, along with Findlay's inability to "bring Conservatives back together.” MLAs Ian Paton of Delta-South, Peter Milobar of Kamloops Centre, Rosalyn Bird of Prince George-Valemount, Áʼa꞉líya Warbus of Chilliwack-Cultus Lake, Scott McInnes of Columbia River-Revelstoke, and Linda Hepner of Surrey-Serpentine River also announced their resignation from the party. In September 2026, Findlay removed three MLAs from the Conservative caucus for questioning her leadership.
A comparative genomic analysis of 494 complete Pseudomonas genomes, including 189 complete P. aeruginosa genomes, identified several proteins that are shared by the vast majority of P. aeruginosa strains, but are not observed in other analyzed Pseudomonas genomes. These P. aeruginosa-specific core genes, such as cntL, cntM, plcB, acp1, mucE, srfA, tse1, tsi2, tse3, and esrC are known to play an important role in this species' pathogenicity.
While the first term is simply the zero-point energy, the negative second term describes an attractive force between neighboring oscillators. The same argument can also be extended to a large number of coupled oscillators, and thus skirts issues that would negate the large scale attractive effects of permanent dipoles cancelling through symmetry, in particular. The additive nature of the dispersion effect has another useful consequence. Consider a single such dispersive dipole, referred to as the origin dipole. Since any origin dipole is inherently oriented so as to be attracted to the adjacent dipoles it induces, while the other, more distant dipoles are not correlated with the original dipole by any phase relation (thus on average contributing nothing), there is a net attractive force in a bulk of such particles. When considering identical particles, this is called cohesive force. When discussing adhesion, this theory needs to be converted into terms relating to surfaces. If there is a net attractive energy of cohesion in a bulk of similar molecules, then cleaving this bulk to produce two surfaces will yield surfaces with a dispersive surface energy, since the form of the energy remain the same. This theory provides a basis for the existence of van der Waals forces at the surface, which exist between any molecules having electrons. These forces are easily observed through the spontaneous jumping of smooth surfaces into contact.
Thy-1 or CD90 (Cluster of Differentiation 90) is a 25–37 kDa heavily N-glycosylated, glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored conserved cell surface protein with a single V-like immunoglobulin domain, originally discovered as a thymocyte antigen. Thy-1 can be used as a marker for a variety of stem cells and for the axonal processes of mature neurons. Structural study of Thy-1 led to the foundation of the Immunoglobulin superfamily, of which it is the smallest member, and led to some of the initial biochemical description and characterization of a vertebrate GPI anchor and also the first demonstration of tissue specific differential glycosylation.

Native GLP-1 is degraded within minutes by dipeptidyl peptidase-4 and neutral endopeptidases. Semaglutide carries a non-natural amino acid at position eight that blocks that cleavage, and a fatty diacid side chain that binds albumin. The result is a much longer duration of action than the native hormone.
The fatty diacid chain associates strongly with serum albumin, which keeps the peptide in circulation and shields it from rapid renal clearance. Bound peptide is released gradually, producing a sustained receptor signal. This mechanism also reduces the peak-to-trough variation seen with shorter-acting analogues.
The balance between peripheral receptor activation and signalling in the central nervous system is not fully resolved. The extent to which slowed gastric emptying accounts for reduced energy intake, compared with direct effects on appetite circuits, is debated. Long-term effects on lean mass and on tissues outside the gut and brain are still under study.
Sealed, protected from light, and refrigerated at two to eight degrees Celsius for most research material. Desiccated storage limits moisture uptake. Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.
